How the Dasha calculation begins.
Vimshottari uses a repeating nine-planet sequence totaling 120 years. The birth Nakshatra identifies the first ruler; the Moon's progress through that Nakshatra identifies how much of the first period remained at birth.

Why exact birth details matter.
The Dasha starting balance is proportional to the part of the Nakshatra remaining in front of the Moon at birth. A small change in lunar longitude shifts the dates slightly; a birth close to a Nakshatra boundary can change the first planetary ruler entirely.
